When people think of cleaning, they often imagine a mop, a hoover, and a spray bottle — but ask any professional cleaner, and they’ll tell you: it’s so much more. Behind every sparkling surface is a person with skill, hustle, and heart. Let’s take a look at a typical day in the life of a cleaner, and why their role is so vital — and often underestimated.

6:30 AM – The Early Start

I’m up bright and early and often before most people are having their first cup of coffee for the day! We clean an office daily and need to get it cleaned before everyone arrives for their working day. The early hours are quiet, focused, and productive. It’s just us, our kit, and a checklist.

We don’t just wipe down surfaces— it’s knowing how to disinfect properly, which products to use where, and how to clean quickly without cutting corners. I’m so much faster than I was two years ago and I know how to work efficiently.

9:00 AM – On the Move

After the early clean is done, it’s off to the next job. I’m a mobile cleaner so I have a van. My next clean is a domestic one and I’m cleaning one of my favourite houses. They have a dog called Ted and he always shows me his favourite toys. He supervises my work and tries to trip me up on the stairs! Time management is key because whilst I love seeing Ted; I have a job to do and I need to get to the next one on time.  It’s a delicate dance between efficiency and thoroughness, and it takes real experience to strike the balance.

12:30 PM – A Quick Bite (Maybe)

Lunch breaks can be brief — I don’t always have the luxury of a full hour with my feet up. I check my schedule for any notes for my next job and quickly text the office manager to update her on restocking at the first clean I did this morning.

1:00 PM – Afternoon Challenges

This afternoon is an End of Tenancy Clean, it’s a last minute one for an Estate Agent we work for a lot and we never let them down. It’s so important that we have a good relationship with our clients and we want to do a good job for them so that their business runs smoothly.  No two days are the same. We work in teams at End of Tenancy cleans because they are hard work and pretty exhausting. We get into every nook and cranny. We clean sockets and switches, limescale and grout, window tracks and inside wardrobes, every balustrade on the stairs, every light and every slat on the venetian blind!

We have to be adaptable. We work in so many different environments but I love the variety. I love to see the clients and I like to see the finished article. I’m always aware of safety, hygiene regulations, and customer needs.

5:00 PM – Wrapping Up (Or Not Yet)

I’m now done for the day but some of my colleagues are not. Some of my colleagues are now working in schools once all the children have gone home and some are back in offices cleaning up ready for the next day. We clean spaces people don’t notice until they’re dirty. We make everything run smoothly behind the scenes.

More Than a Job

Cleaning isn’t just physical work — it’s emotional labour too. Cleaners are often the unsung heroes of a team. We notice the small things. We respect people’s space. We build quiet but trusting relationships with clients. We are the silent army and we take pride in making a difference — even if it goes unnoticed sometimes.

Now for some real talk; sometimes we make mistakes. Not today but sometimes I might forget to empty a bin under a desk. Please don’t be too harsh on me- just let me know. I didn’t do it on purpose. We are all human after all and this isn’t a job you can do half heartedly. We do our job because we like it and I never set out to do a bad job or a half baked one.

I really enjoy my job and that is partly down to the people I clean for… so thank you!
